Greetings from Silver City, where we have been enjoying some fine fall weather. The big winds they predicted for last weekend happily never materialized for us. There is a flash flood watch starting tomorrow at noon from the remains of a storm in the Pacific Ocean, but fingers crossed, that will work out alright as well.
In the meantime, we have been doing some travel planning but also enjoying the fall decorations and colors around Silver City as well as checking out a couple of free offerings at the university.
Last night, we went to campus for a free talk as part of WNMU’s Distinguished Lecture Series. It was titled “Opening the Doors of Environmental Perception,” basically observing how to observe the world around us.
The speaker was Mitchell Thomashow, the former Chair of the Environmental Studies program at Antioch University and a former President of Unity College in Maine. He has written a number of books on environmental issues. He spoke for an hour and then took questions from the audience. I’m not sure I learned a ton (except for more about what I don’t know), but it definitely felt more enlightening than most of the stuff we end up watching on television.

Today, we walked back to the university (after having done our workout there earlier) to check out the latest exhibit in the newly reopened Francis McCray Gallery of Contemporary Art. It had been closed for the change over in exhibits when we did our initial walk around the campus. It turned out to be a small gallery with the current exhibit based on works by various associate art professors at the university.

The painting, “Paean,” was done in 1999 by Francis McCray
and is part of the permanent collection.

Poems are not usually posted in art galleries, but as an English major, I’m all for it.

Finally, some fall observations around the university and nearby neighborhood.

Observe my ecological observation!
Halloween decorations are popping up as well.
